Ilha das Flores - The Isle of the Flowers by Jorge Furtado (Brazilian Short Story)
This is one of the greatest Brazilian Short Stories (as a experimental documentary) by Jorge Furtado from 1989. It refers to the social problems and poverty faced in Ilha das Flores, an island where garbage is thrown at and the food given to pigs worth more than the one given to kids. Watch it !
It tracks the path of a tomato from garden to dump with the help of a monotone voiceover and a collection of bizarre images. While a very humorous film, the message it delivers about how human beings treat each other is anything but such. The director himself has stated that the film was inspired by the works of Kurt Vonnegut and Alain Resnais, among others.
The film has been denounced as "materialistic" because one of its early credits displays the phrase "God doesn't exist". Nevertheless, critic Jean-Claude Bernardet defined Isle of Flowers "a religious film", and the Brazilian National Bishop Confederation awarded the film with the Margarida de Prata (Silver Daisy), calling it "the best Brazilian film of the year" in 1990. In 1995, Isle of Flowers was chosen by the European critics as one of the 100 most important short films of the century.
PLOT
A constant and verbose off-narrator guides the viewer through the life of a tomato. Beginning at Mr Suzuki's tomato field, the tomato is then sold to a supermarket, where it is acquired by Mrs Anete, a perfume saleswoman, together with some pork. Each exchange requires the presence of money, which is, together with the tomato, the constant element in the story. Mrs Anete intends to prepare a tomato sauce for the pork, but, having considered one of Mr Suzuki's tomatoes inadequate, she throws it in the garbage. Together with the rest of the garbage, the tomato is taken to Isle of Flowers (Ilha das Flores), Porto Alegre's landfill. There, the organic material considered adequate is selected as food for pigs. The rest, which is considered inadequate for the pigs, is given to poor women and children to eat.
This is an English Version! Enjoy!
Let me know what you thought about it.

quien iva a pensar

30 Seconds to Mars is coming soon to Brazil.
It is worth watching this interview with the yummy Jared Leto!
The Thirty Seconds to Mars singer talks about dressing in drag, and getting banned for being too racy. Plus, Jared gives George a gift that's inappropriate for television.

Innovative Film And Art Animations From The Past 10 Years
From the big film screen to the small computer screen, the past ten years have seen a boom in animation- both in the film world and the fine art world, (not to mention the DIY craft world). While we know the list could go on, check out the slideshow below for a compilation of few of our favorite, innovative animations from the past 10 years. What are some of your favorite animations?
Don Hertzfeldt is the creator of many short animated films, including Rejected, nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 2000. You may recognize some lines from these shorts, as they've gained a cult following over the years. Short, quirky, and hilarious, these shorts definitely paved the way for the many youtube and pop culture animations
The Triplets of Belleville (2003), directed by Sylvain Chomet, is one of our favorite animations of the decade. This nearly silent film manages to paint a touching and unique story without the use of much dialogue; the story is told through pantomime and song. Talk about innovation. The film was nominated for two Academy Awards — Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for "Belleville Rendez-vous". It was also screened out of competition (hors concours) at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival.

South African artist Robin Rhode works predominantly with everyday materials: charcoal, chalk and paint, creating performances in which he interacts with the objects he creates. Imagine a chalk drawing of a basket ball court that he then animates, photographing his own body in action on this two dimensional court. Rhode combines traditional visuals, performance, video and photography. One part street artist, one part animator, Rhode is definitely an innovator
It's not often that documentary styles are combined with animation for feature length film; Israeli film director, Ari Folman's takes this challenge with his notable Waltz with Bashir (2008). For this film, Folman filmed standard interviews, and mixed them with his own surreal visions and dreams of his experiences in the Lebanon War as a 19 year old soldier. The result is a deep exploration of the aftermath of war.
With her recent work at Art Basel Miami and the Venice Biennial, Swedish video artist, Nathalie Djurberg, shows that her stop motion claymations are not as innocent as they seem, but rather, studies in human behavior, exploring nightmares, fears, and desires, uncensored. Her short films are fantastical and dark; her use of claymation adds irony to her graphic and erotic films

National Ballet of China - Raise the Red Lantern
After sell out seasons in London, New York and Washington the National Ballet of China makes its first visit to Brazil. This prestigious company of 70 dancers presented the internationally acclaimed classical ballet Raise the Red Lantern for 8 performances at the Municipal in Rio de Janeiro.
Raise the Red Lantern, directed by Zhang Yimou, is one of the most sublimely beautiful and openly controversial films of the 1990’s. Zhang’s unique method of story telling – seen in his House of Flying Daggers and Hero combines an almost choreographic use of image with a powerful narrative. Raise the Red Lantern won him an Oscar nomination and universal acclaim.
Zhang brings cinematic and passionate vision to the dance stage with his stunning adaptation of one of his most acclaimed cinematic creations.
It is an event of cultural significance an internationally acclaimed classical ballet, featuring an original score by Qigang Chen and choreography by Xin Peng Wang in the first ever Australian tour of the National Ballet of China.
