Choco-Roll

Rabanada (Brazilian-Style French Toast) Recipe

Rabanada usually makes an appearance on the Brazilian breakfast table around Christmastime, but it’s so delicious we whip it up all year long. Most recipes call for the bread to be soaked briefly, fried, and sprinkled with cinnamon sugar. Our version sits overnight before frying to allow the custard to really soak in. Then, like a churro, we completely cover it in a cinnamon-cocoa-sugar mixture. Team this with a Marinated Mango or Grapefruit Spike, and you’re set for Sunday brunch.

What to buy: Use unsweetened cocoa powder in this recipe.

We prefer the custardy texture that results from using a narrow (about 2 inches wide) baguette rather than a thicker one; however any size baguette will work.

Game plan: Frying the bread for 8 to 10 minutes makes for a crispy outside and a custardy interior, but go ahead and adjust the cooking time to your French toast preferences.

INGREDIENTS

1 medium sweet or sourdough baguette
3 large eggs
3/4 cup sweetened condensed milk
6 tablespoons whole milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon fine salt
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Vegetable oil, for frying

INSTRUCTIONS

1 - Cut baguette on the bias into 1-inch-thick slices (you should have about 16 slices).

2 - Place eggs, condensed milk, whole milk, vanilla extract, and salt in a medium bowl and whisk until evenly combined. Pour mixture into a shallow dish that will snugly hold all of the bread (such as a glass baking dish or a large pie plate) and add baguette slices. Turn slices to coat well in the mixture. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until egg mixture is almost completely absorbed, at least 4 hours or up to overnight.

3 - Place sugar, cocoa powder, and cinnamon in a small bowl and mix until evenly distributed; set aside.

4 - When the bread has finished soaking, fill a medium pot with oil to a depth of 2 inches. Heat over medium heat until the oil registers 330°F on a deep-fat thermometer. Place reserved cinnamon-cocoa mixture on a plate and set aside. Line another plate with paper towels and set aside.

5 - Remove bread slices from the egg mixture, allowing any excess to drip off. Place 4 to 6 pieces of bread in the hot oil (being sure not to overcrowd the pot). Fry until bread slices are dark golden brown on one side, about 4 to 5 minutes. (You’ll want the oil to maintain a temperature of 325°F while the bread is frying; adjust the heat as necessary to achieve this.) Flip and fry another 4 to 5 minutes. Remove to the paper-towel-lined plate to drain.

6 - While still hot, dredge French toast in the cinnamon-cocoa mixture and shake off any excess. Repeat the frying process with the remaining bread slices and serve.

Voila! Enjoy!

Innovative Film And Art Animations From The Past 10 Years

From the big film screen to the small computer screen, the past ten years have seen a boom in animation- both in the film world and the fine art world, (not to mention the DIY craft world). While we know the list could go on, check out the slideshow below for a compilation of few of our favorite, innovative animations from the past 10 years. What are some of your favorite animations?

Don Hertzfeldt is the creator of many short animated films, including Rejected, nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 2000. You may recognize some lines from these shorts, as they've gained a cult following over the years. Short, quirky, and hilarious, these shorts definitely paved the way for the many youtube and pop culture animations

The Triplets of Belleville (2003), directed by Sylvain Chomet, is one of our favorite animations of the decade. This nearly silent film manages to paint a touching and unique story without the use of much dialogue; the story is told through pantomime and song. Talk about innovation. The film was nominated for two Academy Awards — Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for "Belleville Rendez-vous". It was also screened out of competition (hors concours) at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival.

South African artist Robin Rhode works predominantly with everyday materials: charcoal, chalk and paint, creating performances in which he interacts with the objects he creates. Imagine a chalk drawing of a basket ball court that he then animates, photographing his own body in action on this two dimensional court. Rhode combines traditional visuals, performance, video and photography. One part street artist, one part animator, Rhode is definitely an innovator

It's not often that documentary styles are combined with animation for feature length film; Israeli film director, Ari Folman's takes this challenge with his notable Waltz with Bashir (2008). For this film, Folman filmed standard interviews, and mixed them with his own surreal visions and dreams of his experiences in the Lebanon War as a 19 year old soldier. The result is a deep exploration of the aftermath of war.

With her recent work at Art Basel Miami and the Venice Biennial, Swedish video artist, Nathalie Djurberg, shows that her stop motion claymations are not as innocent as they seem, but rather, studies in human behavior, exploring nightmares, fears, and desires, uncensored. Her short films are fantastical and dark; her use of claymation adds irony to her graphic and erotic films

Year Accomplishments & Resolution

Here I go. I will share with you my year accomplishments and resolutions. I have the (nerd) habbit to write down in my agenda or notebook the near term, middle term (2 years) and long term (5 years) resolutions every year. I have realized some of my projects and wishes this way, but I confess that it is nerd.

Well, here are some of this year´s accomplishments:

1. PROMOTION
I was promoted, was released from pressure and long hours of work. I do not have to work until 5am during New Year´s Eve or Carnaval. This was a good acoomplishment! Haha. I will have my first calm and great New Year´s Eve with fireworks at the beach!

2. POEM BOOK
I hired a designer to work on my soon to be released poem book. The poem book consists of 78 poems and 13 illustrations done on coal and Chinese Ink by me. The project was sent to the Cultural Ministry to be approved and sponsered.

3. QUESTION BOOK
I decided to go independently on my Question Book project. The Question Book is a pocket game-book with 317 questions for you to play with your friends. The best accomplishment here was the decision itself. I am waiting for a year now on a very famous and big Publisher Business which liked a lot my project but apparently was "waiting for the best editorial moment to publish it". This project became more of a self-realization project and I decided that even losing money, I would make it happen independently. So, I am going for it.

4. THE ART REFERENCE BLOG
I started THE ART REFERENCE blog on March 2010. It has being a great pleasure of mine. This is a space that I write what I want, I share my days, my art visits, travels, readings and my opinions, I open a space for Guest Columnists to contribute with the blog sharing their projects.

Here are some of my 2011´s resolutions are:

1. HEALTH LIFE STYLE
This year I started (and quited) rowling at the Lagoon. I started exercicing in the gym only in the weekends    and I struggled to get some pounds as I was too skinny (48kilos, almost 105.6 pounds). Now I weight 53kilos or 116.6 pounds. I can at least donate blood now.

2. RELEASE THE QUESTION BOOK INDEPENDENTLY.

3. RELEASE THE POEM BOOK WITH A SPONSORSHIP.

4. MAKE MORE MONEY. (I THINK THAT WOULD BE THE HARD ONE! HAVE BEEN TRYING FOR A WHILE NOW..HAHA. IF YOU CAN HELP ME, LET ME KNOW)

5. READ MORE OFTENLY AND FOCUS ON THE ART BOOKS I BOUGHT. CHECK SOME OF THE BOOKS I HAVE ALREADY READ HERE!.

6. READ THE JAMES JOYCE´S BOOK A PORTRAIT OF AN ARTIST AS A YOUNG MAN THAT I WILL GET FOR X-MAS.  (PLEASE DON´T TELL MY MOM THAT I KNOW IT)

7. DON´T BE AFRAID OF UNCERTAINTIES OF LIFE.

8. FINISH MY MBA AND WRITE MY FINAL PROJECT.

9. DEVOTE MOST OF MY TIME TO ART AND MY PERSONAL PROJECTS.

10. START PAINTING AGAIN AND SELL MY PAINTINGS.

11. DEVELOP MY PERSONAL WEBSITE MARCELALANNA.COM WITH MY PAINTINGS, WRITINGS, PROJECTS, VIDEOS AND A LITTLE E-SHOP FOR MY BOOKS.

12. LOOK MORE AT THE MOON. ENJOY THE SUNLESS BEACH ON MY BEACH CHAIR.

13. BE MORE HUGGED. BE MORE KISSED. SMILE MORE OFTEN.

14. PLANT A TREE.

Do you list your year resolutions? Did you accomplish them?
How do you measure the sucess of a year? By number os kisses? By number of nights out? By projects realized? By heart beats? By moons? By good food eaten? By travels? By new friends or new people you meet? By smiles? By hours you spend in front of the computer? By ...

Let me know, pls!

Sea´s King and Queen

Every summer there is the swimming championship in Copacabana Beach called Sea´s King and Queen. I went there and here are some pictures.
It was so funny, because it was so but so hot that no one had the patience to stay there for the whole time. The producer had to come up with lots of subterfuges like handling ice to everyone to rub on their sandy bodies and crazy dancing penguins !!

Project 5AM - Guest Columnist Jason Haye

Five AM
by Allen Ginsberg

Elan that lifts me above the clouds
into pure space, timeless, yea eternal
Breath transmuted into words
Transmuted back to breath
in one hundred two hundred years
nearly Immortal, Sappho's 26 centuries
of cadenced breathing -- beyond time, clocks, empires, bodies, cars,
chariots, rocket ships skyscrapers, Nation empires
brass walls, polished marble, Inca Artwork
of the mind -- but where's it come from?
Inspiration? The muses drawing breath for you? God?
Nah, don't believe it, you'll get entangled in Heaven or Hell --
Guilt power, that makes the heart beat wake all night
flooding mind with space, echoing through future cities, Megalopolis or
Cretan village, Zeus' birth cave Lassithi Plains -- Otsego County
farmhouse, Kansas front porch?
Buddha's a help, promises ordinary mind no nirvana --
coffee, alcohol, cocaine, mushrooms, marijuana, laughing gas?
Nope, too heavy for this lightness lifts the brain into blue sky
at May dawn when birds start singing on East 12th street --
Where does it come from, where does it go forever?

.........................................................

This poem inspired the PROJECT 5AM created by Jason Haye. Project 5am is about capturing and following the essence of being in the moment. It is a site which falls on various levels. It can be viewed as a celebration of creativity or as a 2 year old diary of exploring a moment of enlightenment. The cryptic aspect of the site reflects the Allen Ginsberg poem 5am that it was inspired from and the mystic of the people, stories and philosophies that I have encountered on my journey.

5am...
A moment that can happen at any time.
when everything falls into place,
clarity is at it’s clearest,
confusion transforms into oneness
and when fate…
Welcomes you with open arms.

*This post was written by Jason Haye from England.
Thanks Jason for the tip!
